Setting Up Khmer Unicode on Mac OS X

Now you can get Khmer Unicode working on Mac. You can browse webpages with your favorite browser or use word processing with Khmer Unicode. Khmer Unicode works on Mac with fonts designed by Mr. Danh Hong. You will need the Khmer Keyboard driver for typing Khmer.

The downloads are all free. The instruction also shows how to configure Open Office Word to render Khmer Unicode properly and setup keyboard shortcuts.

Download and install Khmer Unicode Fonts

This procedure shows how to setup Khmer Unicode for Mac (OS 10.4 or higher).

  1. Download and install khmer font:
        - Font can be download here:  http://khmerlc.org
        - Unzip and place font in the font library: HD/Library/Fonts

  2. Download keyboard driver for mac:
        - Driver can be download here: http://www.khmeros.info/drupal612/node/3168
        - To install these keyboards driver, copy the two files to HD/Library/Keyboard Layouts,

         - Go to System Preferences > International (or Language & Text for Snow Leopard) pane
                - Select "Input Sources" tab and desired Khmer Keyboard

        - CLOSE System Preferences. You may need to reboot the computer for Keyboard to take effect.
        * In both keyboards, if the CAPS lock is depressed, the output will be as a standard English keyboard.

Setup Language Keyboard Shortcuts

To create Language Keyboard Shortcuts:
    - Open System Preferences
    - Selects KEYBOARD > keyboard shortcuts
       - First you must select SPOTLIGHT and de-select the two shortcuts, then
    - Select Keyboard & Text Input > check "Select the previous input source" and "Select next source in Input menu".
    - Double-click the shortcut and hold down the new keys (any key combination you want...)
    - Go back to SPOTLIGHT and select the two shortcuts back...or you can leave it uncheck if you don't want to use SPOTLIGHT shortcut.

Configure Open Office Word

Using Khmer unicode on Mac:
    - After installing khmer font and keyboard driver, Open Office Word:
    - Under FORMAT, Select FONT
    - In the FONT BOX, check "Enable all ligatures in document"
